explores the work of the American Freedmen's Inquiry Commission (AFIC) during the United States Civil War and the reconstruction period examining the two trips to Canada West taken by AFIC member Samuel Gridley Howe and how Howe's policy recommendations, in spite of interviews with the region's white and black residents, ignored these accounts and were greatly influenced by racial stereotypes and pseudoscience.
