はじめに、明治初期における琉球政策、熊本鎮台沖縄分遣隊、西南戦争、尚泰の上京、政府の手に渡った琉球の公文書、むすび。 1879年の琉球処分=併合にいたる前の軍事的布石となる熊本鎮台の沖縄配備、西南戦争と琉球処分に関わる人物などに焦点をあて、国王尚泰の上京をめぐる動きや、明治政府による「歴代宝案」や「冊封詔勅」など琉球藩の外交にかかる文書の接収について考察している。
