『じゃじゃ馬馴らし』の改作として知られる王政復古期の喜劇、ジョン・レイシーの『スコットランド人ソーニイ』について、ペトルーキオの従者ソーニイが「スコットランド人」となることで明らかになるイングランドとスコットランドの微妙な関係を文化、経済、ジェンダー等の観点から考察。また、ペトルーキオの行き先を「インド」に定めていることの意味も取り上げて、最大の見せ場第5幕の喜劇性を考察。
